Plant Highlights

Arctostaphylos 'Sunset' (Manzanita) - This hybrid of A. pajaroensis and A. hookeri is a dense, mounding shrub with shiny medium green leaves that are bright copper when young; young twigs are covered with fine white hairs. Mature bark is light orange-brown. During the plant's shedding of old bark the new bark is a honey brown. Pinkish white flowers appear in spring. Hardy to 5 degrees F. This a landscaping staple that will provide a wonderful medium sized foundation shrub that is green all year.

Hybrid, natural; origin = cuttings (1974) Prunedale, central coast, Monterey Co., named for Sunset Magazine's 75 year anninversary; intro Saratoga Hort. 1976 (Research credit: Tree of Life nursery)
