Plant Highlights

Lupinus arboreus is an evergreen shrub growing 3'-5' x 4'. The shrub is endemic to California, where it is widely distributed among coastal sage scrub and sand dunes.

Loads of scented, 6” spikes of purple or yellow flowers are produced from Spring till mid-Summer, attracting butterflies & bumblebees in mass. This has been widely grown as an ornamental plant, for its attractive flowers in traditional, native plant, and wildlife gardens. It is a good choice for dry gardens, parking strips and hillsides. This plant is natural found on coastal bluffs, dunes and slopes so provide good drainage. Bush Lupine will self-sow so please take note when planting in a wildland interface to avoid it spreading into habitat where it does not belong! Cut it back in Fall to keep it bushy. This is an excellent cut flower. Hardy to 10-20 degrees F. Tolerates sand and seaside conditions.
