Plant Highlights

Rhamnus californica (now renamed Frangula california) is a fast-growing evergreen shrub that is found throughout California and beyond. Coffeeberry provides a beautiful. easy backdrop for your landscape, with dark green leaves and very attractive berries in the fall that are green to begin with then turn burgundy and then black. The flowers are not significant to our human eyes but a magnet for our native pollinators. New growth stems are a stunning red. Coffeeberry will grow in sun or part shade and is easy to establish. Loam, sandy loam soils are the preferred soil type and this plant is not recommended for heavy clay soils. Coffeberry is typically 10' at maturity but can reach 15' high and 6'-8' wide.
