Plant Highlights

Spicebush is a large, deciduous shrub, with bright green large leaves and a reddish-brown fragrant burgundy flower, (April-Aug.), that smells like red wine. Native to the mountains of central and northern Cal.it will do well in Southern gardens if provided shade and moisture. It is tolerant to sandy or clay soils. In the interior it will get leaf burn if it goes dry, but looks good if given regular water and shade. It is ideally suited to a woodland effect garden, or riparian area. some have indicated that Spice Bush can be trained onto a trellis, although we have yet to test that out.
