Plant Highlights

Heartleaved Penstemon makes a real show with its red tubular-shaped flowers in the late spring/summer season. This plant is cold and drought tolerant .It is vine-like with gracefully arching stems that will intertwine with other plants, shrubs and trees. Look for it adorning scrub oaks in the spring in Central and Southern California chaparral. It is drought deciduous in hot, inland areas, so place it among other shrubs that will hide its dormancy if necessary. If it does go summer dormant it is best to cut back to 6" ready for a great revival the next spring. Hummingbirds flock to these bright red flowers.
