Plant Highlights

Asclepias californica is endemic to California but is most widespread in the southern part of the state. This is a drought tolerant species that does well in hot dry conditions. Like other drought tolerant milkweeds, the stems and leaves are covered with a thick covering of long hairs giving the plant a woolly appearance. This plant can be found growing on slopes in clay and sandy soils. Asclepias californica is an important monarch butterfly caterpillar host plant, and chrysalis habitat plant.

Bought this from a local nursery. First time ever seeing californica before as I only have others such as narrowleaf, woollypod, speciosa, and antelope horn. Very excited to let this grow as I have been hunting for MONTHS for this thing

Received 4 A. Californica plants in May 2022. Very nice plants. These young plants look a little strange because the leaves from the early growth are small and hairless. The later growth leaves are hairy as they should be.

Good morning. I bought 4 Asclepias Californica from you guys last year when they were available. But my friend think it’s Asclepias eriocarpa. Can you please let me know for sure if it is asclepias californica as I would like to plant more.

I live in Sacramento, CA; I currently grow several species of Milkweed in my backyard flower garden now (curassavica, tuberosa, speciosa). All of these plants do well ... lots of flowers and now growing pods/seeds again this year. Will the CA Milkweed grow well here in Sacramento? Would it make sense for me to buy a plant from your nursery at this time of year? Or should I wait until the spring time to buy?
