The exquisite blooming "Allen Chickering" variety, a hybrid of Salvia clevelandii and S. leucophylla, is a large shrub that can reach five feet quickly. Its dark purple flowers form in whorls at intervals along the flower spike. The flowers are attractive to bees, hummingbirds, and many butterfly species.The leaves are a light gray-green with and scented. It may require some pruning in tight planting locations.
