Plant Highlights

This California Fuchsia is also know as Hummingbird Trumpet or California Mountain Fuchsia. It is found from Baja to Northern California on dry slopes and ridges below 10,000'. It performs well at high elevations but is also very showy in inland areas and down by the coast. The Hummingbird Trumpet is a rich green clumping sub-shrub that can grow up to 2' tall and almost 3' wide. It will spread from its roots. Its bright red flowers attract hummingbirds from summer through fall. California Fuchsia is an important nectar source for hummingbirds as it bridges the gap between the nectar filled sage flowers of early summer and the winter nectar producing flowers of the manzanitas and currants. This fast growing plant is great for borders and dry banks. The flowers are nice in cut flower arraignments. As with all Epilobiums, it is best cut back in winter to encourage thick growth the following year. In some areas the fuchsia will go completely dormant in winter. It is best with some summer water, about every other week once established.
