Plant Highlights

This fast-growing, easy lilac grows anywhere from 6'-25' and spreads to 15'. Shiny bright green leaves provide the perfect backdrop for profuse blue flowers that grow in clusters from March through April and even into May. This small tree works as a foundational shrub or informal hedge, or can be espalliered against a wall. Blueblossom is an important habitat plant, hosting the larvae of a number of butterflies and moths, nectar for bees and other pollinators, and providing food and shelter for birds and small mammals. It is one of the easiest Ceanothus to grow and has thus become popular in landscapes, and as the basis for a number of garden varietals. In its natural habitat Blueblossom varies widely in height and spread, from 3'-20'. In southern California we recommend full sun for coastal plantings and light or dappled shade inland.
