Powerfully fragrant and incredibly long blooming Alpine Cleveland Sage was selected for its ability to put on a beautiful flower display despite being one of the cold-hardiest and most drought tolerant of its species. Alpine Sage tolerates temperatures well below freezing as well as the hot summer sun of its natural environment in East County San Diego. Due to its long bloom time the Alpine variety is a particularly good addition to wildlife gardens. Use it as a screen along a pathway or in a flower border. The flower spikes are attractive in cut-flower arrangements and the birds will enjoy snacking on the seeds. This variety was discovered growing wild on a rocky south-facing slope of San Diego's Cuyamaca Mountains near the small town of Alpine. Alpine Sage was introduced by Bert Wilson of Las Pilitas Nursery
