This is a broadleaf evergreen tree with rich orange-red bark that peels away on the mature wood leaving a greenish silvery appearance that has a satin sheen and a smoothness that sometimes feels cold to the touch. In spring it bears sprays of bell like flowers which turn to red berries in autumn. The berries dry and have hooked barbs that latch onto large animals for dispersal. The leaves turn brown during the fall season and detach from the branches. This stately tree is native to Northern California and will require some babying to establish in Southern California but you'll find it is well worth the effort.
