Cliff spurge is a perennial succulent type shrub that reaches dimensions of 3 to 5 feet tall by 3 feet wide. It has an upright or mounding growth habit and grows best near the coast tolerating seaside conditions well as it is found naturally on sandy coastal bluffs or coastal sage scrub. It is a good candidate for container gardens with its sculptural limbs but note that it is deciduous so loses its leaves for a part of the year. Cliff spurge has an unusual flower with white petals and red/yellow centers. The California Native Plant Society notes that this plant is particularly rare in California and is very specific to San Diego. Cliff spurge prefers well-draining soil and full sun and needs little watering once established. Inland it needs to be protected from frost. Plant this rare native in your garden for added texture and interest from its artfully twined limbs and a glimpse of its strangely beautiful blooms in spring!
