Purple needlegrass is California’s official state grass and one of the state’s most widespread native grasses. This hardy perennial bunchgrass grows 2–3 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide, forming graceful clumps of fine green blades topped with purple-tinged seed heads. Its deep root system makes it highly drought-tolerant and valuable for erosion control and soil stabilization. Easy to grow in a variety of soils, including poor and disturbed areas, purple needlegrass provides important habitat and seeds for birds and wildlife, making it an excellent choice for native meadows, restoration projects, and low-water landscapes.
