Peritoma arborea as it is now named has gone through multiple name changes in the recent past (previously Cleome isomeris and Isomeris arborea ) and is still often labeled with a prior name in the trade. But it's performance and almost year round flowering is unchanging! This medium sized evergreen shrub has sunny yellow flowers which become 1" inflated green seed pods which give it the name Bladderpod. It is a very underrated plant in our opinion combining hardiness and drought tolerance with a very long flowering season. In fact this plant hardly seems to stop flowering and the flowers are very attractive. The foliage is grey-green and pungent smelling. It is highly drought tolerant when established and prefers well draining soils. Until now it has mostly been used for highway and roadside plantings but we predict that gardeners will be using it more and more in borders and on slopes to add year-round color to their landscape.
