This native evergreen shrub the Desert ceanothus commonly grows to less than 6' high. Leaves are dark green twigs gray and the flowers white. The flowers are very fragrant and perfume the surrounding air. Desert ceanothus is thought to improve soil fertility by fixing atmospheric nitrogen and is well-adapted for use in stabilizing both neutral and acidic soils. Highly fire resistant coupled with drought heat and frost tolerance makes this perfect for the landscape especially for desert or dry mountain gardens. Desert Ceanothus can be used as a hedge and is commonly used in low-maintenance landscapes. Ceanothus are important larval hosts to butterflies and moths provide nectar to bees and other pollinators and seed for the birds.
