St. Catherine?s lace is widely used in landscaping and for good reason.  Planted in well-draining  preferably rocky  soil this evergreen shrub is fast growing and long lasting. It can survive in a hot  sunny spot with very minimal water  but will look its best with some supplemental water.  Despite its natural island origins  this plant does well inland and tolerates frost and even some snow! The slightly furry soft gray-green leaves provide nice contrast to the dark greens of lilacs  toyons or manzanitas.  Dense flower heads of small pinkish white flowers will cover this plant during a long flowering season from spring through fall. As with most Buckwheat  the flowers will gradually turn to a rusty brown color as they mature. This flowering shrub is very wildlife friendly  hosting butterflies and providing nectar for butterflies  bees and other pollinators. Once the seed sets it will provide food for birds. It is best to pinch back fast growing stem tips to keep this plant looking full. Deadhead flower stalks for longer flowering season (although leave some for the birds if you wish!) This useful California native plant will typically reach 3? high and 3? wide.
