Coastal Sagebrush, also known as California Sagebrush, is an evergreen shrub with aromatic, feathery foliage that ranges from light green to gray-green as it matures. It typically grows 3–4 feet tall and is native to much of central and southern California. It is a major component of the “sage” in coastal sage scrub.
Artemisia californica thrives in full sun, especially near the coast and on west- and north-facing slopes inland. Once established, it requires little to no supplemental water. Prune it back occasionally to prevent it from becoming woody.
Indigenous peoples made a tea from the plant that was used to reduce fevers. The smoke from burning the brush was also used to remove skunk odor. Its seeds germinate after wildfires, and burned plants can crown-sprout following fire.
Coastal Sagebrush is an excellent wildlife plant, providing welcome cover for quail. It is also a great choice for restoring difficult, south-facing coastal sage scrub sites and is an important habitat plant for the endangered California Gnatcatcher.
