This hardy manzanita is quite variable in appearance and there are numerous sub-species. It is most easily recognized by it's basal burl which will re-sprout with multiple stems after a fire or other damage.Height varies from 3 to 8 feet and spread is variable to 8 feet. One of the toughest manzanita's it grows usually on sandstone or clay and doesn't need much water. This particular species is diverse in its forms and ecology; it grows primarily in chaparral habitats but has also grown into several pine forests. Sub-species crassifolia is to be found along the coast in San Diego although coastal development has made it a rare sight. Sub-species adamsii is found commonly in the foothills in Riverside and in the Laguna Mountains.
