Matted Buckwheat or Cushion Buckwheat forms a mat of white-woolly leaves  spreading to 18" in diameter. Flower stems are bare  to 4" long  with a single head of flowers supported by a single small cup. The flowers are yellow  fading to red. Grows in sandy or rocky soils at high elevations. Cultivated as a rock garden plant. Important source of nectar for native bees and butterflies.
