San Diego's very own Sunflower is a rare perennial blooming shrub that is perfect in tough sundrenched locations and sloped dry terrain. It will provide many months of bright yellow sunflower type flowers. Viguiera laciniata now renamed Bahiopsis laciniata is attractive to butterflies hummingbirds and various other pollinators. The pale green leathery leaves create a dense thicket frequented by birds looking for seeds. This shrub will bring activity and color to gardens and is especially attractive planted among other sun-loving drought tolerant perennials such as Sages Penstemons and Woolly Blue Curls. This plant responds well to dead heading and pruning and has even been known to successfully provide a colorful low hedge.
