It is an annual tussok plant that is quite variable in appearance  since its size and shape is determined largely by environmental conditions. It grows reaching a height between 5 and 80 centimeters. It forms a narrow inflorescence of spikelets   each fruit with three edges.  It is native to the Americas   and is distributed almost all over the world.
