A decidedly cheerful California native Layia platyglossa or tidy tips as it?s commonly known can be found in natural environments including sunny meadows coastal hillsides or along transient vernal pools. Tidy tips produces a multitude of daisy-like flowers from early spring until summer about March through June featuring bright yellow centers and yellow petals that are neatly edged in white. The pleasing scalloped edge to the flowers lends itself to a cottage garden look. These annual plants grow just about 6 inches high and spread to about a foot. Tidy tips look spectacular planted en masse on a hillside or clearing and blend in well with other wildflowers like California poppies. Tidy tips prefers full sun does not mind clay or loamy soils and needs a bit more watering than some other California natives. A great plant for attracting butterflies!
