Also called coyote mint this highly fragrant perennial herb grows in compact mounds about 1 to 2 feet tall by 2 feet wide. The lush gray green leaves enjoy sun to light shade and the plant produces 1 to2 inch round lavender blooms in summertime from June through August a favorite of butterflies and other native pollinators. Coyote mint needs well-draining soil but can tolerate weekly watering if necessary less in summer. Great on rocky slopes or serpentine soil it also does well in sand or clay. After coyote mint is done flowering cut back to encourage healthy new growth and an improved appearance. An excellent choice for rock gardens edging a walkway or using as a groundcover coyote mint fills in nicely and keeps a neat compact form.
