Pickleweed S. pacifica is a wide-spread salt marsh species in Southern California. It is native to salt marshes and alkaline soils throughout coastal California. It is occasionally found in Alaska and the East Coast. 
Also called pickleweed or sea asparagus, this low-growing perennial forms dense green stems that often turn reddish in the fall as it stores and removes excess salt. Growing about 8–35 inches tall and spreading into low clumps, it is commonly  Highly adapted to challenging conditions, Pickleweed also provides important habitat for shorebirds and other wildlife, making it a valuable plant for coastal restoration, habitat gardens, and saline landscapes.
